The 5 Best RV Water Leak Detectors (2026) — And Where to Actually Put Them

Most RV emergencies announce themselves. A propane alarm screams. A dead battery won't crank. A hot rig with a dog inside is a countdown you can feel.

A water leak does none of that. A fitting behind the water heater weeps a few tablespoons an hour into the floor structure. Nothing sounds, nothing smells, nothing looks wrong from the doorway. Six weeks later the floor near the pantry has a little give to it — and by then the leak isn't the problem anymore. The rot is.

That's the case for $20 sensors: not because water is dramatic, but because it isn't. Here are the five we'd put in a rig, judged on the thing we judge every monitor by — whether the alert can get out of the RV — then where they go, and what a slow leak really costs.

1. YoLink Water Leak Sensor 4 — best overall for RVs

The reason is a radio choice. Instead of WiFi, these sensors talk LoRa — rated up to a quarter mile in open air — so a sensor in the rear bathroom reaches a hub in the front cabinet without fighting the rig's aluminum framing, which is what WiFi sensors spend their lives doing.

The rest fits RV life unusually well: 105 dB on the sensor itself, so it's an alarm before it's a notification; IP66, because these live in wet bays; two AAA batteries rated for 5+ years. And critically for a rig stored cold, the Sensor 4 has low-temperature sensing built in, alertable from 23–59°F — one device covering both "there's water on the floor" and "it's about to freeze in here."

Buy the kit, not the sensor. YoLink lists the Sensor 4 at $19.99 individually, but that number is misleading twice over: a bare sensor does nothing without a hub, and as of this writing the single is out of stock anyway (multi-packs run $55.95 for three). The sane entry is the Water Leak Detection Starter Kit — a hub plus four Sensor 4s for $89.99, down from $109.99. That's about $22 per covered location with the hub thrown in, and four sensors is genuinely the right starting number for a trailer.

The feature that sold us is Control-D2D: pairing a sensor directly to a siren or a shutoff valve, a link that fires without internet, without the app, and without the cloud. In a category whose real failure mode is "the alert couldn't get out," that's a different class of tool.

The honest catch: YoLink's current lineup has no cellular hub. The kit's hub, like the upgrade X3 Hub ($59.99), wants 2.4 GHz WiFi or Ethernet. In a storage lot with no internet, the system will scream locally and trigger a paired valve — but it cannot text you. That connection is yours to supply, which is the subject of our connectivity guide. If your rig sits somewhere with power, the X3 Hub is worth the upgrade: 8-hour backup battery, an alert when it switches to battery — doubling as a shore-power loss alert — and an alert if it's offline more than five minutes.

Get it if: you want one sensor covering leaks and freeze, in a rig where WiFi struggles, with local action when the network is down. Skip it if: you refuse to add a hub, or you want a device that phones home on its own cellular radio — nothing here does that.

2. GoveeLife Water Leak Detector 1s — best budget smart sensor

Same architecture, different tradeoffs: sensors on a long-range Sub-1 GHz radio (550 m claimed) reporting to a small WiFi gateway. Good hardware for the money — 105 dB with four volume levels, IP67, dual probes, a claimed 5-year battery — with gateway bundles starting at $43.99 (from $54.99) in several sensor counts. That's the real argument: leak monitoring only works when you have enough sensors, and a system where the fourth one costs $15 beats one where it costs $40.

The limits: the gateway is WiFi-only and 2.4 GHz-only, the same escape problem as the YoLink without the D2D consolation prize. And the missing freeze alert matters — for a stored rig, freeze is half the reason you're putting sensors in the plumbing bay at all.

Get it if: you want the most sensors per dollar and the rig lives where there's WiFi you control. Skip it if: you need freeze alerting in the same device, or the RV winters somewhere without a connection.

3. Aqara Water Leak Sensor — best for Home Assistant and DIY builds

At $18.99, IP67, with a built-in alarm and a CR2032 good for about two years, this is a fine sensor. What makes it the pick for a particular kind of RVer is the protocol: Zigbee, the native language of a DIY build — and the reason it's the one entry here where the hub might genuinely cost you nothing.

If you're running Home Assistant in the rig, these are close to free capability: you already own a Zigbee coordinator, so each sensor really is $18.99 and nothing else. Aqara's documentation says an Aqara hub is required — that's the $29.99 Hub E1 if you're starting cold — but the community-documented path, not vendor-supported so weigh it accordingly, is pairing them to any Zigbee coordinator through Zigbee2MQTT. Then a leak in the wet bay isn't just a notification, it's a trigger: kill the pump, fire the siren, send the push. That's the payoff of DIY, and leak sensors are its best argument, because the response matters as much as the alert.

The caveat is physical: a small plastic puck on a coin cell, designed for a bathroom floor. Two years of battery is a quarter of the YoLink's claim, and RV vibration is harder on everything than a house is.

Get it if: you already run Home Assistant, or you're building toward it. Skip it if: you want to open a box and be done.

4. Zircon Leak Alert — best if you're actually in the rig

No app, no hub, no account. $14.99, a 9V battery, and a 90 dB alarm when the contacts get wet.

We include this deliberately, because the smart-sensor conversation has a blind spot: if you're sleeping thirty feet away, a screamer on the floor is a complete solution. Full-timers are aboard for most of the hours the plumbing is pressurized, and during those hours a $90 connected system adds a log entry over a $15 buzzer. Put three under the sinks and behind the toilet and the failure mode that ruins RVs — nobody knew for six weeks — is handled for the time you're there.

Where it stops working is where the others start: the rig alone in storage, the day trip into town, the flight home with the trailer left on site.

Get it if: you're in the RV most of the time it has water pressure, or you want cheap insurance layered under a connected system. Skip it if: the RV spends real time unattended — which, for most rigs, is most of the year.

5. RV Whisper WTR1 — best if you already own the system

RV Whisper is one of the few systems watching the whole RV — temperature, doors, battery voltage, tank levels — so a leak lands in the same alert stream as everything else, which solves the monitoring sprawl that leaves owners with three apps and checking none of them.

The catches come from our full system comparison: the RVM3 hub is WiFi-only, so the escape problem applies with no local-action fallback, and RV Whisper publishes no price for either the sensor or the station. As an add-on, easy call. As a reason to buy into the ecosystem, price the whole thing first.

What a water leak detector actually is

As the graphic above lays out, there are three kinds, and all five picks here are the first: spot sensors — two or three metal contacts a fraction of an inch off the floor, waiting for water to bridge them. Cheap, battery-powered, lasting years, and detecting exactly one thing: water arrived at this specific spot. Which makes placement the entire product. A spot sensor eighteen inches from where the water goes is a decoration.

The other two are worth knowing about. Cable sensors trade the point for a line and are underused in RVs, where a run along the water heater bay catches water no matter which way the floor slopes. Flow systems watch the plumbing instead of the floor and can close a valve, but they're awkward here: you have two water sources, city pressure and the onboard pump, and a device plumbed for one doesn't watch the other.

Why an RV needs this more than your house does

A house sits still. Your RV is a building that goes through a small earthquake every time you tow it.

Everything vibrates loose. Crimped PEX fittings, compression nuts, P-traps, water heater connections — all taking hours of road vibration and chassis flex no residential plumbing ever sees. Fittings that would sit undisturbed for thirty years in a house work loose in a season of travel.

The sealants are a maintenance item on a clock. Not our opinion — it's in your owner's manual. Jayco's tells owners to inspect every sealant "a minimum of every six months," reseal annually, and warns that if you notice water inside and don't chase the source, the damage may not be warrantable. Roof seams, vent flanges, marker lights, every screw through the roof membrane: each one a joint held closed by a material that UV, freeze cycles, and vibration are actively degrading.

There's no floor drain. In a house a leak lands on a slab. In an RV it lands on a laminated floor structure — plywood, foam, and glue — that is structural. Water doesn't run somewhere harmless; it soaks into the thing holding your rig together.

And nobody's home. The typical RV sits unoccupied most of the year, and every failure above runs on a schedule that has nothing to do with when you're standing in it.

What actually leaks

What a slow leak actually costs you

The damage isn't the water. It's the time.

The structure absorbs it. RV floors and walls are laminated sandwiches; water gets between the layers and they separate — the bubbling in a sidewall owners call delamination. Floors go soft. A $4 fitting becomes structural work on a vehicle never designed to come apart, and it follows the rig forever: soft floors and delamination are the first things any informed buyer checks.

Mold follows fast. A wet cavity in a closed-up rig is close to ideal conditions, and the rigs most likely to have a slow leak are the ones sitting for months — same mechanism as the humidity and mold guide, except a plumbing leak supplies water at a rate ambient humidity never will.

Two pieces of paper may decline to help. Your warranty covers manufacturing defects, not maintenance you skipped — and as Jayco's manual says, damage from a leak you failed to correct may not be warrantable. Your insurance generally covers sudden and accidental damage while excluding gradual leaks, wear and tear, and deferred maintenance. A burst pipe is usually a claim; a fitting that wept for two months usually isn't. Both draw the line in the same place — how long it went unnoticed — and that's the one variable a $20 sensor changes.

None of which makes leak sensors exciting. It makes them the cheapest ratio of prevented damage to dollars spent anywhere in RV monitoring: the pet monitor guards against a rare terrible day, the leak sensor against an ordinary likely one.

Where to put them

The generic smart-home brands sell you the sensor and say "near your water heater." In an RV, the actual list, in priority order:

  1. The water heater bay floor, under the fittings
  2. Under the bathroom sink, at the low point of the cabinet base
  3. Beside the toilet, at the flange — invisible, and it drains into the floor
  4. Under the kitchen sink, at the back where the lines run
  5. The wet bay / pump compartment
  6. Under the shower pan access, if your floorplan gives you one
  7. The basement floor beneath a slide, if you've had slide-seal trouble

Two rules matter more than the list. Put it at the low point, not near the source — water goes where the floor sends it, an RV is rarely level, and the spot you want is wherever a spilled cup would actually pool, even if that's two feet from the fitting you're worried about. Then test the radio where it will live: a sensor in a metal-skinned wet bay, behind a panel, at the far end of the rig from the hub is the hardest link in the system. Trigger it with a wet finger in place and confirm the alert arrives. Everyone skips this, and it decides whether the system works.

What about automatic shutoff? The tier above detection is a motorized valve that closes the water when a sensor trips. In an RV that's useful and fiddly in equal measure: you'd be shutting the city water inlet, while a rig running off its fresh tank needs the pump killed instead. YoLink's D2D pairing makes the sensor-to-valve link work without internet; a Home Assistant build can cut the pump relay directly. It's a project, not an accessory — but for a rig on city water at a seasonal site for months, it's the difference between a puddle and a floor.

The part that decides whether any of this works

That hub you just paid for still doesn't supply the internet. So the question that decides whether your leak detector works isn't about the leak detector. It's whether the alert can leave the RV.

Parked at your house, trivial. At a seasonal site, it depends on park WiFi. In a storage lot there is almost certainly no internet at all, and every WiFi-dependent sensor becomes a very patient device recording an event nobody will hear about — which is why the YoLink's D2D and the plain Zircon both earn their spots. FAQ

Will a water leak sensor work in an RV in storage with no WiFi? Its alarm will sound; its notification won't reach you. Every connected sensor here needs a hub with internet, and none of these hubs has a cellular radio. Bring the connection — a hotspot with reliable power — or pair sensors to a local siren or shutoff valve so at least something happens.

How many leak sensors does an RV need? Three is the sensible floor: water heater bay, bathroom, kitchen. Five or six covers a typical trailer once you add the wet bay and the toilet flange. Buy in kit form rather than one at a time — YoLink's hub-plus-four kit is $89.99, and a leak in the one bay you skipped is the same disaster as having no sensors at all.

Why does a $20 sensor end up costing $90? Because the sensor is half a product. Four of our five picks talk a low-power radio — LoRa, Sub-1 GHz, Zigbee — that your phone can't hear, so a hub has to translate it to the internet. That hub is the real cost of entry, which is why the table above prices these systems all-in. The only exception is the Zircon, which skips the radio entirely and just makes noise.

Do leak sensors detect freezing pipes too? Some do. The YoLink Sensor 4 has low-temperature sensing adjustable from 23–59°F, so one device covers both risks. The Govee and Aqara picks detect water only.

Are RV water leaks covered by insurance? Sudden and accidental damage generally is; gradual leaks, wear and tear, and deferred maintenance generally aren't. Warranties draw a similar line — Jayco's manual warns that failing to correct a known leak may leave the damage outside coverage.

Can I use regular home leak sensors in an RV? Yes — four of our five picks are general smart-home products. What doesn't transfer is the advice: placement is different, vibration is harder on hardware, and the assumption baked into every home product — that there's WiFi here — is the one most likely to be false in an RV.

Bottom line

Buy the YoLink starter kit — hub plus four Sensor 4s, $89.99 — if you're buying one thing: the long-range radio suits an RV's construction, the freeze alerting covers the other half of the risk, and D2D means the system still acts when the network is gone. Upgrade to the X3 Hub if the rig sits somewhere with power. If you run Home Assistant, Aqara sensors at $18.99 are the obvious move, because you already own the hub. And whatever else you install, put a $15 Zircon under the bathroom sink — it works during a power outage, an internet outage, and a subscription lapse.

Then do the two things nobody does: place sensors where water actually pools, and trigger every one with a wet finger before trusting it with a winter.

The pattern here is the one running through every kind of RV monitoring. The sensors are cheap, accurate, and reliable. The part that fails is getting the news off the rig.
